J. David White, (“Dave”), 91, of Cataumet, MA, formerly of Needham and North Falmouth, passed away peacefully early on January 5, 2019 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family and friends during his last few weeks.
He was born in Waltham, MA, on November 20, 1927, son of the late Edward and Rose White and brother of the late Richard White. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pauline Kurgan White and their children and daughters-in-law, John David White, Jr., Kathleen White, Stephen and Grace Grima White, Patricia White, and Michael and Josephine Hurley White. He is also survived by eight grandchildren Connor, Jack, Alex, Katherine, Zachary, Rose, Tessa, and Susan, and brother and sister-in-law Edward White and Patricia White of Needham.
He attended Hudson High School, enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served in the Mediterranean on the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. He graduated from the Feener School of Accounting in 1949 under the GI Bill. Dave spent the next thirty years in public service and a lifetime developing long-term relationships in the Boston area and beyond. Dave served for six years as the youngest selectman in the state for the town of Hudson, MA. During this time, he assisted John F. Kennedy’s senatorial campaign. Dave and Pauline were fortunate to attend Kennedy’s Presidential Inauguration in 1961.
Dave started his career in the Massachusetts Treasury Department, where he served under Treasurers John E. Hurley and John Foster Furcolo. He worked for IBM, then served on the Executive Staff for Governor John Foster Furcolo. His forte was protocol and major events planning, which included organizing the funeral for the legendary James Michael Curley. He served for twenty-three years as the longest sitting executive Director of Materials for the MBTA. Dave was a recognized authority in purchasing and transportation, serving as officer of the National Purchasing Association, New England Transit and Railroad Club, and as a contributing editor to a number of publications. He was the recipient of the Harry J. Graham award for Outstanding Contributions to the Purchasing Profession in 1980. He served on the board of trustees at the Glover Memorial Hospital in Needham, Ma. He then began his own business, J. David White Associates, a technical procurement and outsourcing firm to the transit Industry.
He was a keen observer of politics for over seventy years. When he wasn’t discussing politics, he could be found on the tennis court, playing bridge, or swimming at Old Silver Beach with friends. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family in Naples, Florida and on Cape Cod where he was a long-time member of the Megansett Yacht Club, The Cataumet Club and the ROMEO Group (“Retired Opinion Makers Eating Out”).
His was a life well lived.
A wake will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at Chapman, Cole & Gleason, 584 West Falmouth Highway (Route 28A), West Falmouth, MA. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 10:00am at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road North Falmouth, MA. Immediately following, the burial will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Otis Air Force Base, Connery Ave Bourne, MA.
