John M. Rebelo of East Falmouth, passed away at home surrounded by family on the morning of August 12, 2019 at 75 years old. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
John was born on the island of Terceira, Azores on March 26, 1944 to the late Jose and Ermelinda (Martinho) Rebelo. At the age of 18, he left his small island and set out to explore the world. Traveling with friends, he landed in countries such as Brazil, Australia and Canada doing various trade work. In 1967, sponsored by his sister Emilia, he came to the United States first spending time with her in California and finally making a home in Falmouth, MA.
In 1970 he met the love of his life, whom he fondly referred to as “my Maria.” He swept the young girl off her feet and they married on January 30, 1971 and enjoyed life together for 48 amazing years. During their marriage they had two beautiful children, John Paul in 1977 and Tania Maria in 1979.
John was a loyal employee for over 30 years at Packaging Industries, Inc. in Hyannis, MA. When the business closed in 2005, he found his place at Falmouth Lumber, Inc. where he made many great friendships before his retirement.
John was a dedicated member of the Catholic Church for all of his life, attending Sunday Mass at St. Anthony’s. He was a member of the Portuguese American Club, Fresh Pond Holy Ghost Society and the Azorean Holy Ghost Society. He was an avid sports fan and could always be found in his “spot” in front of the TV watching the Red Sox in the spring, the Patriots in the fall and his favorite sport, Portuguese soccer cheering on Sporting.
Faith and Family were always the most important thing in his life and in December of 2016 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Through it all he never once complained or refused treatment so that he could prolong his life and be with his family. John most loved spending time with his family and they will miss him deeply. His uplifting personality and ability to make people laugh through his stories and jokes will also be truly missed as well as his love and generosity for others.
John was predeceased by his son John Paul, his siblings Leonel Martinho, Carlos Rebelo, Herculano Rebelo, Jose Martinho and Fatima Cunha. Besides his wife, Maria, he leaves behind his daughter Tania Oliver and her husband Joshua. His grandchildren Connor, Avery and Noah Oliver. His brother Abel Rebelo (wife Maria J.) his sisters Maria Bernardo and Maria Emilia Pinkel (husband John) along with many beloved godchildren, nephews and nieces.
John was an amazing “Vovo” to his adoring grandchildren. When healthy, he would pop in to see Connor and Noah’s sporting events and attended Avery’s dance recitals as he had for his own son and daughter years before. He enjoyed vacations to Disney World in Florida with all of them and time in NH. But, mostly he cherished the Sunday afternoon family lunches at the house after mass.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 15th from 5-7pm at Chapman, Cole and Gleason, 475 Main Street in Falmouth. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am on Friday, August 16th at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 E. Falmouth Hwy (Route 28), E. Falmouth.
We will forever be grateful to many of the doctors and nurses that took such great care of him at Beth Israel in Boston and Dr. Hannah Yamin and her team at Falmouth Hematology Oncology and especially to Falmouth VNA Hospice. With their care and guidance we were able to make his last few weeks at home peaceful and comfortable so that he could enjoy his last moments with his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation for VNA of Cape Cod, P.O. Box 370, Hyannis, MA 02601.
