Paul E. Kummer

Paul Evan Kummer, age 96, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 27th, 2019. He was born May 17th, 1922 in Newark, N.J. to Margaret and Martin Kummer. Paul graduated from Bloomfield High school in 1939 and began his college experience at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. as a Chemistry major. His college years were cut short to serve in WWII as a meteorologist in the Army Air Corps. He later completed his studies and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Union College and Master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. On January 19th, 1946, Paul married the late Marjorie McGowen and had a wonderful life of 72 years together. Paul worked for the Thompson-Weinman & Co. for 38 years. He retired as the Vice President and Technical Director of Thompson-Weinman & Co. Division of British Petroleum. Marjorie and Paul enjoyed life in Roseland, N.J. with their daughter Ruth. They also enjoyed retirement in Sarasota, Fla. and Cape Cod, Ma.

Paul was involved in choral music since he was ten years old when he joined the church choir. He continued singing in the Bloomfield High School Chorus, N.J. All State Chorus, Cadet Chorus, Roseland Presbyterian Church and Church of the Palms Choirs and most recently with the Thirwood Singers.

Paul also took on many community roles in Roseland, N.J. which included the Planning Board, Kiwanis, Presbyterian Church bowling team and the West Essex Regional High School Board of Education, North Caldwell, N.J. He, along with Marjorie, received the award “Volunteers of the Year” in 1990 from the Roseland Town Council.

Left to honor Paul is his brother Jack, daughter Ruth with husband Michael, niece Linda, granddaughter Patti with husband Robb, grandson Rick with wife Jordan and five great grandchildren Timmy, Wesley, Miles, Elise and Elsie. A Memorial Service honoring Paul will be held at Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth, Ma. in the spring.
