Richard grew up in Everett and after finishing trade school, he joined the US Coast Guard in 1948. Richard served aboard the CGC Eastwind in Greenland during the Korean War and served for six years. Richard met his beloved wife, Hazel J. Ryan at a dance in Chelsea. They got married March 1952 and celebrated sixty-six years together. They settled in Stoughton where they raised their children.
