Richard J. Piazza, 73, of North Falmouth, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2018 at home surrounded by family and friends. He was the son of the late Michael S. Piazza and Margaret (Barrett) Piazza.
Richard graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School (1963), the University of Connecticut (1966), and Suffolk University Law School (1974). He was extremely proud to be an attorney and had a great love of the law. After practicing for 2 years in Boston, he opened his law office in Falmouth in 1976. In 1983 he was invited to join the Cape & Island District Attorney’s office under District Atty. Philip Rollins. During his 20 years as Assistant D.A. he was primarily involved with the District Courts in Barnstable & Nantucket. In 1996 he was instrumental in the opening of the Falmouth District Court becoming the first Chief Prosecutor of that court as well as the Edgartown District Court. Those 20 years were the most productive and enjoyable years of his career. His greatest joy was making the courts work smoothly and helping everyone he could in many different ways. He was held with great respect by everyone in the legal community and beyond.
Richard was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, Dukes County Bar Association and the US Supreme Court Bar Association.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol (Schulhof) Piazza, his daughter Lucia and husband Michael Sansoucy and their children, RJ, Caleb, Molly, Quinn and Margaret of Union KY; his son Lee and wife Kristin and their children, Garrett and Isabella of Oakton, VA; and his daughter Melissa and husband Bradley James and their children, Lillian and Bennett of Creston, IA. He is also survived by his brothers, Anthony and Michael, and sister Mary Piazza.
Richard was a gentleman and a scholar. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Our sincere thanks to all the staff of Falmouth Hospital, the VNA Hospice nurses and the Caring from the Heart agency for all their wonderful care and kindness.
