MASHPEE - - Adele B. (Szemela) Barden, 97 of Marstons Mills, formerly of Indian Orchard, MA, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2019 at the Royal of Cotuit. Born on February 23,1922 in Springfield, MA to the late John and Bertha (Grondalski) Szemela.
She graduated from Commerce High School in 1939. Adele married the love of her life in 1952 and they resided in Indian Orchard where they raised their family and were communicants of Immaculate Conception Church. She had a career as a secretary and retired from Lechmere in 1987.
She moved to Cape Cod in 1989, lived with her daughter and family and helped raise her three grandsons. She was lovingly known as “”Babci” to all. Adele enjoyed spending time with her family, reading her newspaper, crossword puzzles and Bingo. She was kind, patient, funny, honest and loyal. She loved the staff and residents of Royal of Cotuit where she lived for the past 2 years. She never went to bed without her rosary.
Adele was the beloved wife of the late George F. Barden, Devoted mother of Mary Beth O’Brien of Marstons Mills and the late Barbara Chmura. Loving “Babci” of Michael and wife Diane O’Brien of Osterville, Daniel O’Brien of Marstons Mills, Kevin and wife Kendall O’Brien of Sandwich; proud Great Babci of Ella, Jake, Claire, Michael Jacob and Leona. She is also survived by her brother Theophil and wife Stella Szemela of St. Petersburg, FL and preceded in death by her siblings: Genevieve, Mitchell, Walter, Eugene and Edward. Adele also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews and her cherished friends, the Slavinsky family of Marstons Mills. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM with a short memorial service at 5:30 on Tuesday, August 13th at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home 3778 Falmouth Rd. Marstons Mills 02648. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11AM on Wednesday, August 14th at Corpus Christi Parish 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Rd., East Sandwich 02537. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Adele’s name for a memorial gift (an electric player piano) for the residents at Royal of Cotuit 161 Falmouth Rd. Mashpee, MA 02649
