Andrew Edward Bennett Sr.

HARWICH - Andrew Edward Bennett Sr., 87, left us for his final trip on May 4, 2018. The day he referred to as “his moving day.” After a long and fulfilling life, he left us to be with the God to whom he devoted his entire life. Andrew, “Andy” came into this world on September 3, 1930 in Norton, MA. A faithful son to the late Charles and Catherine Bennett, Andy grew up in Norton and graduated from Norton High School with the class of 1949. He married the love of  his life, Martha Reed, on November 11, 1949 and they began their life together in Norton where they lived in “The Big House” on West Main St., and raised their eight children. Twenty-five years ago they embarked on their next adventure, living their “Golden Years” in Harwich.

While still in high school, Andy took over the Norton Cab Co. from his older brother. Being a very ambitious young man he bought the Waterman Taxi Co. in Mansfield. Later, he purchased The Dairy Bar and Restaurant in Norton, which he and Martha ran for a number of years. After working for himself, Andy took a position with the Boston Herald as a road man supervising home delivery. While still living in Norton, he went to work for the Norton Schools as a custodian. After moving to Harwich, he became a director of maintenance with the Chatham Housing Authority. Being a man that could never sit still, Andy took care of a number of seasonal properties well into his so called “retirement.”

A man of strong faith and devotion, Andy attended The Bangor Theological Seminary in Bangor, Maine at the age of forty nine. Though he never became a pastor, he devoted his life to ministering others. He served as Deacon in the church and held numerous positions working on church boards. He was always working to help the homeless and the youth.

One of his most beloved past times was playing softball with the Cape Cod Old Timers Softball League. He was a die-hard Red Sox Fan, and loved watching their games. He always read the daily newspaper and could tell you pretty much everything that was going on in the world.

In addition to his loving wife of sixty eight years, Martha, Andy loved and is survived by his son Andrew Jr. and his wife Denise of No. Attleboro & Falmouth, MA, daughters Catherine and her husband Roger Graham, Cynthia and her husband Wayne Remillard, Constance and her husband Roy Eldredge, all of Harwich Ma., Carol and her husband Robert Riendeau of DeBary Fl., Christine and her husband David Gonsalves of Palisades, Maryland, and Corrine and her husband Jeffrey Forbes of No. Attleboro, Ma. Andy was the proud Grandfather to nineteen including his name sake Andrew E. Bennett III. Great Grandfather to Twenty Including Andrew E. Bennett IV. Also he was proudly called “Uncle Andy” by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter Candace Rockwood of Mansfield, Ma.,his sons-in-law Keith Slobogan, and Richard “Rocky” Rockwood. His brothers Charles, Everett, and Leo, and his sisters Ella and Jeannette, his mother and father-in- law, Myrtle and William Reed, his brothers-in-law, William, Fred and Donald Reed and his sisters-in-law Mary and Mildred Reed.

Andrew’s family would like to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation to the dedicated staff of Broad Reach for the loving care and compassion they provided Andy and his family during this difficult time. As Andy would say, “I love you all and may God bless you!” Visitation will be on Tuesday May 8th from 4-7PM, at Morris O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main Street Harwich Center Ma.
