Arlene S. Pass

Barnstable – Arlene (Sadof) Pass, 86 of Hyannis, passed away peacefully after a long illness on June 8, 2019. Arlene was the daughter of Samuel and Anna (Goodman) Sadof and the loving wife of Gerald Pass of Hyannis, MA.

Arlene was born in Boston, MA and was a graduate of Dorchester High School and Boston University. Her first exposure to Cape Cod was working summers at Thompsons Clam Bar on Wychmere Harbor. After graduating college and newly married, Arlene moved to Littleton with her husband Gerald who was stationed in Western Massachusetts and took a position as a medical secretary at Fitchburg Hospital. In the early 60s, they settled on Cape Cod where they co-owned and operated, along with Gerald’s parents, Cape Cod Delirama on Main Street, Hyannis. Arlene was an early member of the Cape Cod Synagogue where she dedicated over 40 years to preparing future generations of students for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. She worked tirelessly on numerous committees at the Cape Cod Synagogue while being a lifetime member of the Sisterhood and Hadassah. She was affectionately known as the “Sears Lady” and “Auntie ‘Lene,” to many, and rarely missed an opportunity to show off a sparkly pin on her sweater. Never too far from Craigville Beach sitting with the “Ladies,” Arlene always had an upbeat personality. Upon retirement, Arlene relocated to Southern Florida before coming back to Cape Cod in 2015.

Arlene always put her family first. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she adored her family throughout every stage of life. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William and Harold Sadof. Arlene is survived by her daughter Cheryl Canning and her husband Robert, daughter Debra Sverid and her husband Scott, and her son Jonathan Pass and his wife Lori. Five grandchildren; Ashley Calise and her husband Timothy, Courtney Harris and her husband Jeffrey, Joshua Sverid, Zachary Sverid and his wife Shelby, and Jacob Pass. Seven great-grandchildren; Olivia, Charlotte, Mason, Matthew, Eli, Parker, and Sarah.

A funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 11th at the Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter Street, Hyannis. Burial to follow at Mosswood Cemetery, 280 Putnam Avenue in Cotuit, MA. The family will be sitting Shiva on Tuesday, June 11th and Wednesday, June 12th at 7:00pm.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Wingate Brewster and Harwich for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent to the Cape Cod Synagogue Religious School, 145 Winter St., Hyannis, MA 02601. For online condolences and directions please visit
