Barbara A. Kiely

Barbara A. Kiely of Hyannis, Massachusetts passed away February 21, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her family. Born in Holyoke, MA, she was the daughter of Catherine and Patrick Shevlin of Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland. She is survived by her five children Catherine (Michael Baldini), Matthew (Tracy Kiely, their children Jack, Elizabeth, and Pat), Mary (Jim Melanson, their children Conor and Aidan), Edward (Jen Kiely, their children Ned and Will), Bridget Nora, grandchildren Marah Alvarado and Thomas Alvarado, sisters-in-law Shirley Shevlin and Marcella Kiely, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Francis, daughter, Margaret, sisters, Mary Sweeney and Norine Rondeau, and her only brother, Edward.

Barbara graduated from Holy Rosary Grammar & High School and The College of Our Lady of the Elms.  Before her marriage, she was a teacher in Holyoke and later in Granby, MA where she and Francis raised their six children.  She was an active member of the community, teaching math and science in the public school system, working for the CCD at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and serving for 19 years as an elected member of the Board of Trustees of the Granby Public Library.

Barbara and Francis had an adventurous spirit in their retirement years, driving cross country several times, revisiting their honeymoon spot in Niagara Falls, traveling to Ireland with their children and grandchildren, and visiting with friends and family all over the country.  After her husband died, her children kept up her adventures with sailing trips in the British Virgin Islands and lots of parties and shenanigans on the Cape. While Barbara was a mere five feet tall, she possessed the personality of a giant. She was the matriarch in every sense and was fiercely devoted to her family who adored her in return.  Her generous spirit and sly Irish wit endeared her to all who met her, and she will be missed terribly.

A funeral mass will be held at 11am on Thursday February 25, 2021 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, MA and can be viewed livestream at  Burial  will follow the Mass at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
