Mrs. Carol Van Allen (Hessler), of Falmouth, MA died peacefully surrounded by her family on November 24, 2017. She was 80 years old.
Carol was born on September, 25, 1937 in Little Falls, NY to the late George and Anne (Slaboc), Hessler After graduation with honors from Little Falls High School in 1955 she went on to earn her nursing degree at the Faxton Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She married her high school sweetheart, Frank Van Allen on April 23, 1960 and the pair moved to Cape Cod, MA, in November of 1965. Here they built their life of 57 years together and welcomed their three children into their lives.
Over the years Carol worked in a variety of nursing positions including as a ward nurse at Falmouth Hospital, and as a private duty and Hospice Care nurse. Her remarkable kindness and compassion inspired all three of her children into careers in health care. She was proud of their various accomplishments, but also very proud of her training and career as a nurse. She was quick to remind her daughter, Deborah, who became a surgeon, to remember that she was raised by a nurse and to always show respect and gratitude to the men and women in this profession.
In addition to her career and raising her children, she also enjoyed camping trips with her family, gardening, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In recent years Carol also dedicated herself to volunteering as a facilitator for the ALS support group on Cape Cod. After retirement, she and Frank also enjoyed fleeing the cold and spending their winters among friends in Crystal River, FL.
Carol is survived by her loving husband, Mr. Francis A. Van Allen and her three children and their spouses, Sandra & Dwain West of Falmouth, MA, Daniel & Sara Van Allen of Boca Raton, FL and Deborah & Benjamin Appleyard of Barrington, RI; her nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sister Nancy Hessler also of Little Falls, NY.Carol passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a short illness. She will be remembered as a dedicated wife, mother, nurse, and as a deeply empathetic person who was always quick to lend her ear or offer help to anyone sick or in need.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 4:00pm to 7:00 pm in the Chapman Cole & Gleason, Funeral Home 584West Falmouth, Hwy, Route 28A West Falmouth.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 29 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church,. 481 Quaker Road, No. Falmouth, MA 02556. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carol's life. Interment will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
