Catherine (Kate) Rosemary Sweeney of Bourne passed away on Monday, October 21, 2019. She was born in Rochester, New York on September 30, 1925 to Catherine and James Meagher.
In 1950, Kate married the love of her life, Francis J. Sweeney of Wareham. They lived in Greenfield for many years. In 1972, Kate and Fran moved their brood to Monument Beach. They lived on Phinney’s Point until the late 1980s.
Kate was always about fitness and for many years she led a community exercise class known as “Shape Up with Kate.” Many marveled that she was the mother of twelve children born over a period of thirteen years.
Kate is survived by eleven children, Michael and his wife Ann, of Greenfield; Patricia Coady and her husband John of Monument Beach; Catherine (Kit) Weiland and her husband Bruce of Plymouth; Margaret Merrigan and her husband Tom of Falmouth; John (Jack) and his wife Lori of Pocasset; Christine Hanrahan and her husband Terry of Medfield; Peter of Pocasset; James of Monument Beach; Elizabeth Sweeney of Monument Beach; David and his wife Sophia of Shrewsbury; and Mary Fran Sholds and her husband Peter of Salem. Kate is also survived by thirty-one grandchildren, and thirty-six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Kate was predeceased by her husband Fran in July 2013, her son Tom who died in 1970, and her grandson Jackie Coady who died on December 29, 2014.
Her funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28), Wareham on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 – 6 PM at the funeral home.
