Charles W. Eager, 95, of South Yarmouth, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 31, 2018 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Murphy) Eager for 53 years.
Charlie was born and raised in Fall River. He was the son of the late Hilda (Murphy) and Carl Eager. He was a 1940 graduate of Durfee High School and then spent four and a half years in the Navy proudly serving his country during World War II. Honorably discharged from the Navy, he entered the Massachusetts State Police class of 1947, the first class after the War. During his time with the State Police he served in Troops A, C and D. Some of the achievements he was most proud of while on the force were writing the grant for the first State Police helicopters, implementation of the 40 hour work week, providing cruisers for every trooper, and being appointed first director of research and development. Charlie retired as Captain of Troop D in 1971 after 24 years of service. After his retirement from the State Police, he began a second career at The Raytheon Company as an investigator, retiring in 1989.
Throughout his life Charlie enjoyed serving his community. He was elected and served as a Yarmouth selectman from 1971 - 1976 and Barnstable County Commissioner from 1975 – 1985, serving as chairman for all 10 years. He volunteered for many organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Chairman of the Board for the Cape Cod Chapter, a leader for the Sea Explorers, Dennis-Yarmouth Boosters Club, Knights of Columbus, Yarmouth Meals on Wheels, and various committees at St. Pius X Parish where he was a charter member. He was awarded the parish’s Marian Medal in 1985 for his dedicated service to the church.
Charlie is survived by his two sons, Charles and his wife Sandra of Barnstable and Richard and his wife Jean of Grafton. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Whitney Worthy, Katie Eager, and Brittany Cormier; two great-grandchildren, Charley and Avery; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by an infant son, Robert, and a sister, Louise (Eager) Boulay.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth on Monday, August 13 at noon. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, 68 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.
