Chet Harris Jr., age 86, of West Falmouth, MA passed peacefully at the JML Care Center in Falmouth, MA on September 30, 2019 after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his son, Bruce Harris; his brother, Skip Harris; and parents, Chet and Irene Harris. Chet is survived by his wife, Pat Harris; three daughters, Cheri Harris Dugan, Amy Harris Cummings and Jess Harris; five grandchildren, Thayer Harris, Elise Harris Weeks, Maggie Dugan, Owen Dugan, and Jackson Cummings; and two great-grandchildren, Amelia Weeks and Avit Dugan.
Born and raised downeast in Eastport, ME in a family of boatbuilders, hunters and fishermen, Chet learned the definition of hard work and self-reliance. He took a brief break from the sea while attending the University of Maine Orono's School of Mechanical Engineering and subsequently serving in the US Army Reserves in Texas. Upon completing his service duties, Chet began his career at GE as a Mechanical Engineer in New England. He went on to found several companies, mostly involving testing equipment for international manufacturing companies. However, running just one business at a time didn't quench his drive. When he moved to Cape Cod 48 years ago, he started a professional boat building business as a side "hobby" business. His beloved Harris Cuttyhunk Boats are still found throughout the East Coast. While he always remembered every customer from his 65+ year working career, his boat customers were by far his most talked about and favored. As is the house he built for his family during the evenings and on weekends.
Chet was not afraid to try new things and could build and fix almost anything. He was incredibly devoted to his family and unflappably patient and kind to everyone. With steadfast morals and a selfless character, you could always trust Chet. Some say he was built like his boats, with solid construction and constitution. Despite the heavy demands of his careers, Chet lived in the moment while simultaneously, quietly planning and working hard for the future. He was one of a kind and will be treasured eternally by all who knew him.
The family sends sincere gratitude to the staff at Falmouth Hospital, JML Care Center and VNA Hospice for their compassion while taking care of Chet. His patience and kindness made him a great patient who never complained, even in the face of defeat.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 4th from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Highway (Route 28A), West Falmouth, MA. At the request of the family, burial services will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation in Chet's name to the Falmouth Hospital or the Buzzards Bay Coalition.
