Sandra, On behalf of the Downs family, please accept our sincere sympathy on the death of your beloved Nelson. We were deeply saddened to learn of his death. Please know that you and our family are in our prayers. The deBettencourt and Downs families go back a long way. In fact our Mothers nursed together at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital prior their respective marriages, and the five deBettencourt children and six Downs children grew up together, sharing school, church, and play activities throughout our formative years. And, of course, visits to the deBettencourt Garage were always special experiences. Throughout his life, Nelson was a principled man of great character and was thus a good example, not only for his family, but for all of us fortunate to have known him.

When I started visiting the Lesnikowskis in the 1990’s, my father mentioned that he has an Army buddy on MV, and that I should look him up. After a missed connection, Anne called Nelson up and he and my father got reacquainted. From then on, I made it a point to go visit Nelson each time I visited the island, and if he had time, he would show me his latest project. I cherish those moments, and will miss him dearly. Godspeed, Nelson. May your travels in old Jeeps go smoothly.

We are very sad to hear of Mr. DeBettcourt's passing. We have fond memories of seeing him at the Gas Station, and inquiring with him and Billy Faria what was going on in the world (Red Sox) that day. Also helping me get the application for My First Charge Card when it was a Mobil Station (Maybe Texaco?), and also being picked up and dropped off the School Bus at deBettencourt's Gas Station, and seeing Nelson and Everyone working there. Your Family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
