Daniel Patrick Severino

Daniel Patrick Severino, 86, of Centerville, MA passed away Friday July 24, 2020. Dan was born January 8, 1934 in Sommerville, MA to Belmira and Manuel Severino of São Miguel Island, Portugal. He was the youngest of three sons, his older brothers were Gilbert “Gill” (Vivian) and Andy (Joan).

Dan was an athlete extraordinaire. A talented baseball player, Dan led Somerville High School’s baseball team to two state championships, where he pitched at Fenway Park.

Dan received a four-year athletic scholarship to pitch at Villanova University and quickly became an integral part of Villanova’s historic surge toward a national title. In 1952, Dan and his teammates became the first ever baseball team at Villanova to earn an NCAA playoff berth, where they beat St. John’s before falling to Penn State.

Upon graduating, Dan was drafted by the Chicago White Sox and pitched three years in their minor league system with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and the Davenport, Iowa DavSox

. In 2001, Villanova inducted Dan into their athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his impressive baseball career and his contributions to Villanova’s historic 1952 playoff success.

Following his baseball career, Dan returned to Somerville. In 1958, Dan married Dorothy “Dottie” Mullen, and Dan began his teaching career—a career that spanned 35 years as an elementary teacher, coach, and vice principal at the Charles G.Pope Elementary School and the John F. Kennedy Elementary School.

Dan and Dottie moved to Centerville in 1982, a town they fell in love with while honeymooning near Craigville Beach years earlier. Dan commuted to Somerville until his retirement in 1993.

Dan loved many things: sports, baseball of course, and Villanova athletics. More than anything though, Dan loved Dottie. For 62 years, they were the love of each other’s lives and were inseparable.

Dan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Mullen) Severino, their son Paul Severino, grandson Jared Severino, and predeceased by his parents and brothers. Funeral services will be at Our Lady of Victory (230 S Main St. Centerville, MA) on Friday, July 31 at 11:00 am.
