David A. Velesig, 73, passed away peacefully after a long illness, on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at his home with his loving wife of 51 years and his children by his side.
David was born in Indiana, PA, a son of the late John and Ramona Velesig. During his high school years Dave excelled in sports and participated in baseball, football and track. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville where he was proud to have a full football scholarship. Dave taught physical education at Mashpee Middle School for 32 years and coached softball and football. He was active in various sports programs in his community, both as a coach and a fan. Dave was a union negotiator for the Mashpee Teachers Association and successfully negotiated for Extended Maternity Leave for women. Dave and Michael Horne brought Youth Baseball to Mashpee in 1974 and by 1975 Mashpee had both Little League and Babe Ruth Programs. Above everything, his family was of most importance to him. One of his favorite things to do was to watch his grandchildren’s games and events.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Christie Cardillo Velesig, loving daughter, Kimberly Baker and her husband Keith, devoted son, David Velesig and his wife, Danielle, cherished grandchildren, Kyle Baker, Jack Baker, Anna Velesig and Davey Velesig. He is also survived by his brother, James (Cassie) Velesig, sisters-in-law, Donna (Frank) Pensa and Barbara (Tom Shanks) Cardillo and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John (Sally)Velesig.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Dave’s life on Saturday, October 12, 2019 from 1 to 4 pm at the at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Avenue (RTE 151), Mashpee.
