David E. Chaffee

David E. Chaffee, of Bridgewater, died on June 28, 2019 at the age of 91. He was the son of the late Ruth E. (Thompson) and Arthur C. Chaffee.

David attended Case High School through his junior year. Moving from Rehoboth to Bridgewater, David then graduated from Bridgewater Academy class of 1946. After graduation, he went to work on the family’s 300-acre dairy farm, with his father and two brothers. In 1949, David joined the Masonic Fraternity, Fellowship Lodge AF and AM, in Bridgewater, serving as its Master from 1962-1963; as its Secretary for 16 years, and he was then appointed District Deputy Grand Master of the 29th District, Grand Lodge of Massachusetts from 1969-1970. He also served 3 terms as Worthy Patron of the Bridgewater Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. David was a devoted member of Central Square Congregational Church, and served as Church Moderator for 5 years. David and Anne were active members of the church Couples Club and maintained many strong friendships for years after the group dissolved. David enjoyed playing games such as cribbage, shuffleboard, horseshoes, and ring toss. You would often find him with a cribbage board at family picnics challenging one of his grandchildren to a game, or playing horseshoes with his sons. He especially enjoyed dancing, in his younger years, with his wife Anne - sometimes attending square dancing 3 times a week!

David met his wife, Anne E. (Dyer) Chaffee, in 1946 and the two married in 1950. Anne and David raised their three sons in Bridgewater. In 1978, the Chaffee Farm was sold to the town, and it is now the "Olde Scotland Links" Golf Course. Upon retirement, David and Anne bought a home at the Colony Cove Mobile Home Park in New Port Richey, FL. They spent their winters in Florida and their summers in Bridgewater.

David was the loving husband of 69 years to Anne. Father of David E. Chaffee Jr. and his late first wife, Heather (Paquin) Chaffee, and his current wife, Kathy (Hayes) Chaffee of Brooklyn, CT; Philip R. Chaffee and his wife Carol (Hanson) Chaffee of Bridgewater; and Russell E. Chaffee and his wife Donna (Wilcox) Chaffee of Bridgewater. He was predeceased by his 4 siblings, Arthur Chaffee Jr.; Roscoe Chaffee; Edna Blackmer; and Nancy Lloyd and also his grandson, Brad. David was the proud grandfather of Brad, Lorna, Karen, Jordan, Erika, Kaitlin, Jill, Austin, Tyler, Rachel, Russell Jr. and Audrey and 5 great-grandchildren; Gregory, Amber, Marley, Amelia and Hadley. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
