David R. McPhelim

David R. McPhelim of Falmouth, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the Royal Nursing Home, Falmouth, MA.  He was 81   He was the husband of Barbara (VanHam) McPhelim for 44 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Matthew and Jean (MacCrone) McPhelim.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by his children, Lisa and husband Gordie Ernst of Chevy Chase, MD, and Sheryl and husband Steve Colwell of Upton, MA; his grandchildren: Emily Tobin of Irvine, CA, Grayson, Chelsea and Skyler Colwell of Upton, MA, and Olivia and Phoebe Ernst of Chevy Chase, MD. He also leaves his siblings, Brian and Patricia McPhelim of Easton, MD, and Kevin and Heidi McPhelim of Freeport, ME.

David was a 1955 graduate of Rindge Technical School, a 1959 graduate of Harvard College, earning his Master’s at Boston University in 1964. He was the manager and owner of the Falmouth Sports Center from 1977-2014. Formerly, he was a teacher, coach and vice principal at Chelmsford High School. He was a member at Woods Hole Golf Club and Harbor Head Tennis Club--he loved playing tennis. He was a huge Red Sox and Patriots fan and loved talking sports with the guys at the Elks. David was also a beach lover and so enjoyed winters on Turtle Beach in Siesta Key, FL and Woodneck Beach here in the summers. Other interests include reading, crossword puzzles, gardening and outdoor projects. In 2015, David self-identified “I’m an enigma wrapped in a mystery”.

A memorial visitation will take place from 1:00–4:00 PM on Saturday, February 23rd in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy (Route 28A), WEST FALMOUTH. A private family celebration will be held later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Falmouth Service Center, PO Box 208, Falmouth MA  02541.
