Derek Ralph Little

Derek R. Little, 83, of Mashpee, formerly of Norton and Acton, passed away peacefully at home, following a brief illness, on June 15, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Joan Little.
Derek was born and raised in Norton, Ma and graduated from Norton High School. Following High School he was drafted by the NY Giants and played professional baseball for some time before being drafted into the United States Army, where he was stationed in Puerto Rico. Following the military, Derek graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelors in Education. He worked as a Physical Education Teacher for a number of years in Massachusetts and Connecticut while obtaining his C.A.G.S. at the University of Connecticut and later his Doctorate in Education at NOVA University. Derek served as director of ESEA Project Lighthouse, a 12 town educational consortium on the South Shore, then became Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Superintendent of Schools in Wilmington. He was a member and president of the Rotary Club in Acton, was an avid golfer and lover of fine foods. He was also a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his wife Joan, Derek is survived by 2 children Rev. Geoffrey Little and wife Blanca of New Haven, CT, June Bond and husband Timothy of Brentwood, NH, his sister Olive Riendeau of Norton and Florida, 4 grandchildren, Jessica Calle, Benjamin Little M.D., Derek and Gavin Bond, and 2 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home 74 Algonquin Ave. (Rte 151) Mashpee on Thursday June 22, 2017 from 4pm to 7pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday June 23, 2017 at 11:30am in the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
