Donald Michael Schaffer
It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the death of Donald Michael Schaffer, who passed on June 9th 2019 in St. Augustine, Florida.
Mike, as he was known by friends, was born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1941. Upon graduating from Roselle Park High School, he joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Coral Sea when the aircraft carrier was deployed to Vietnam in 1964. It was while he was in the Navy that he met his wife Catherine, who was also in the Navy as a registered nurse. The two soon married and lived in California before they settled in Massachusetts. For 30 years Mike was a guidance counselor at Bristol County Agricultural High School. While there he also coached girl’s basketball and volleyball. He loved his job and had an innate ability to connect with the students. After retirement he spent his time rehabbing an antique sea captain’s house in Brewster that has become the family’s summer home.
After Catherine retired they would split their time between St. Augustine Florida and Brewster. Throughout his life he spent the majority of his free time plotting a way to escape into his garden and fill his bird feeders. In his later years he was active in the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; his son, Michael and his daughters Tara and Katie, and sons in-law Bill Galvin and Michael Balger. He is also survived by grandchildren Reid, Caroline, Greyson, Lauren, Wyatt, James, Sam, Jack and Annie and his sister, Deborah Miller.
A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster, Friday June 28th at 11:00 a.m. He will be buried at the National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Vincent DePaul Society or to Catholic Charities through your local parish..
