Doris R. “Betty” Woolfe, of Mashpee, MA, passed away at Cape Cod Hospital on February 2, 2018 at the age of 91. Doris was the beloved wife of the late Emerson Farwell.
Doris was born and raised in New York City, NY. Early on, she developed a passion for music, and grew up singing in NYC churches. Doris went on to attend both the Packard Collegiate Institute and Eastman School of Music where she refined her passion and craft. Following college, Doris enjoyed a successful career as a professional opera singer from 1946 to 1968. She continued in her musical career while working at the Juilliard School of Music. Doris also had a passion for helping others and serving her community. She worked as a social worker for the city of New York, and later in her life she went on to serve as a community police officer in NYC for 15 years, notably serving during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Doris will be remembered as someone was truly interested in others, and was deft at putting people at ease and drawing them into conversation. She was especially effective at mentoring young musicians. In her later years, Doris enjoyed painting and keeping up correspondence with her many friends from all over the world. She was an intelligent, independent, and free-spirited woman and will be greatly missed by those who love her.
Doris is survived by her brother, George Woolfe of Mashpee, MA, sister-in-law and lifelong friend Elaine Patton Woolfe, of Mashpee, MA, niece Theodora (Tao) Woolfe, of Mashpee, MA, nephew Peter Woolfe, of Danbury, CT, 2 grand-nieces; Jamie Woolfe of Brooklyn, NY, and Jessie Woolfe of New Fairfield, CT; cousin Iris Woolfe, of Wilmington, N.C; her best friend Lucy Hatchek of Port Washington, NY, and many other cousins and friends around the country. Doris was predeceased by her husband and childhood sweetheart, Emerson Farwell, of New York City, NY whom she married at the age of 75.
A visitation will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy (Route 28A), on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM.
