Dr. Robert “Bob” Scarpato
1941 ∼ 2017
OSTERVILLE - Dr. Robert Alfred Scarpato, “Bob”, 75, of Osterville passed away at home on May 14, 2017 after a courageous, six-year battle with ALS.
Born in Boston to the late Joseph Scarpato and Rose (Silvestro) Scarpato, he graduated from Boston Latin School in 1959 and Tufts University in 1963. He attended the Medical University of South Carolina where he met his wife of 43 years, Janet.
His career in vascular and general surgery spanned 30 years and brought him to Cape Cod in 1980. He valued his relationships with patients as much as he enjoyed the technical challenges of vascular surgery. He also dearly loved his surgical partners and hospital coworkers.
He leaves behind his 8 children; Gerald Turner of Hopewell, PA, David and his wife Natasha of Bourne, MA, Heather Connelly and her husband John of New York City, NY, Dr. Kristen Scarpato and her husband Christopher Barrett of Nashville, TN, Christopher of London, England, Amanda and Michael of Charleston, SC and Stephanie of Osterville, MA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Job, Alexa, Jared, Anthony and Lila. He was the loving brother of Zena Merullo, Roy Scarpato and Joseph Scarpato Jr. He also leaves behind his college friends of over 50 years, the “Chinques”, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends that he affectionately referred to as “Sparks.”
Dr. Bob loved reading history, telling stories, making puns, drinking bourbon, and completing crossword puzzles. He often professed his love for his wife and recounted the story of meeting her for the first time. He always bragged about his children and frequently said his family was his greatest accomplishment.
