Dr. Moira Shea, 66, of West Falmouth, MA died of ovarian cancer on April 29, 2020. The daughter of Dr. Mildred (Black) Shea and Dr. John Shea, Moira was born on March 27, 1954 in New York City and grew up in Setauket, NY and Gardner, MA. Moira graduated from Colby College in 1975 and New York Medical College in 1979, during which time she met her future husband, Dr. William (Bill) Wittman. The couple moved to Falmouth in 1985 with their two daughters, Laura and Emily. Moira practiced at Bramblebush Pediatrics until her retirement secondary to illness in 2014.
Moira was a strong, independent woman who worked extremely hard to achieve her goals. She was a compassionate physician who deeply valued those she cared for. Moira’s approach to medicine and the children and their families in her care was admired by her peers and genuinely appreciated by her patients. Many former patients later brought their own children to be in her care.
Above all, Moira valued spending time with her family. She hosted family gatherings, and was the glue that held the family together. She supported her daughters’ passion for horseback riding, taking them to competitions and helping care for the horses. With limited free time, Moira appreciated family trips, and was an avid reader. Moira excelled as a cook and baker, and loved to share treats with everyone from neighbors to colleagues.
As empty nesters, she and Bill enjoyed walking vacations to explore new places and try different foods. She loved raising her backyard chickens, a surprise gift from Laura and Emily for her and Bill’s 30th wedding anniversary. Moira also spent her time rescuing numerous monarch caterpillars and raising them to mature monarch butterflies.
Becoming a grandmother to Nolan and Niles added great joy to her life. Moira treasured spending time with them and watching them grow. She was a wonderful grandmother, a presence in their lives that will be profoundly missed.
Moira is survived by her husband Bill of 41 years, daughters Laura Keeling of University Park, MD and Emily Clark of Tucson, AZ; their spouses Keenan Keeling and Neil Clark; grandsons Nolan and Niles Keeling; sisters Emily Leone and Alice Mecca and their families; and brother John Shea.
Special thanks to all those who helped through her illness, especially her close friend and former practice partner Dr. Barbara Lowe, the Cachalot Lane family, Dana Farber medical providers Dr. Susana Campos and Lisa Arvine, NP, and Falmouth physicians Dr. Keith Bleiler, Dr. Victor Aviles, Dr. Daniel Canaday, and Dr. Devin McManus.
