Dr. Peter M. McKay

Dr. Peter M. McKay

Dr. McKay died peacefully at the age of 67 at Cape Cod Hospital on June 5, 2019 surrounded by his deeply loved family.  Peter was a fixture of the local community having practiced Internal medicine in Harwich for 32 years. Hundreds of lives were touched by his unique and genuine interest in the welfare of his patients.

Born in Salem, Massachusetts to Joseph and Gloria (Poitras) McKay, Peter graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School, received his undergraduate degree from George Washington University and eventually earned his Doctor of Medicine at the Université de Bordeaux, France. It was there that he would find his Scottish gem, his best friend and love of his life, Janet (Smith) McKay. Together, they returned to the United States where he later began his medical practice in Harwich.

In his younger days, Peter was a gifted tennis player and always enjoyed a good round of golf. He also loved to compose and play songs on his guitar. He possessed a clear tenor and sang with the Chatham chorale and Unitarian Universalist choir.

Family was most important to Peter. His passion for ancestry led him to be an amateur genealogist, allowing him to connect generations of family from the US, Ireland, Australia, Canada and France. Peter traveled to these countries to create lifelong relationships and these visits were deeply meaningful to him.

He was and always will be well known and loved for his quick wit and storytelling. He was a humble man of true character.

Peter leaves behind his pride and joy, Andrew and Elizabeth (McKay) Drumm. Andrew and his wife Laura (Stone) McKay reside on the Isle of Wight in England. Dr. Elizabeth Drumm and her husband Brandon reside in Holbrook, MA. This past fall, Peter was elated to welcome and enjoy time with his first grandchild, Kellan Peter Drumm.

Peter is survived by his mother, Gloria, his wife, Janet and seven siblings: David (Ruth) McKay of Marshfield, MA, Bob (Kathy) McKay of Windsor Locks, CT, John (Ann) McKay of Amesbury, MA, Sheila (Joe) (McKay) Conley of Concord, NH, Deb (Carter Steger) McKay of Springfield, VA, Patti (Rick) (McKay) Berry of Salem, MA and Cindy (Fredy) (McKay) Martin of Santa Clarita, CA as well as many nieces and nephews. Peter is preceded in death by his father, Joseph and his youngest sister, Janice (McKay) Beck.

Public visitation hours will be held on Friday, June 14th from 4-7pm at the Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home located at 58 Long Pond Drive South Yarmouth, MA 02664.
