Edward “Ted” Linhares, age 85 of Monument Beach and Vero Beach, FL died peacefully on February 13, 2019 in Bourne. He was the beloved husband of Marion T. (Simmons) to whom he was married for 61 Years.
Ted was born in Taunton, MA to Mary (Correia) and Jesse M. Linhares on August 23, 1933. He graduated from Coyle High School in 1951. Ted served his country as a member of the US Army Signal Corp in Korea during the Korean conflict. After his service, Ted attended Bryant College in Providence and earned a B.A. in Business in 1958.
Ted worked in state and local government for over 30 years. His career began as an Auditor for the Commonwealth of Mass. He was elected Selectman for the Town of Dighton. Most recently, he served as the Business Manager for Bourne Water District for 23 years from which he retired in 1994.
Ted was an active member in several community organizations, most notably with the Lions Club from whom he received a lifetime service award. He volunteered with several local youth and athletic groups, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a board member of the Special Workshop Opportunities Program for children with mental and physical challenges. He was an enthusiastic golfer and was a member of many golf clubs/leagues on the Cape and in Vero Beach. Ted loved a good card game and was a life time member of the Tuesday Night Poker Group.
Besides his wife, Ted is survived by his children: Edward Adam Linhares of Falmouth, James Linhares and wife Katrin (Schneider) of Sagamore, Mary Linhares and wife Renee Healy of Palmetto, FL, and Janet Shea and husband Michael of Monument Beach. Ted’s grandchildren include: Kaitlyn, Jessica, and Erin Shea; Jonah, Janna and Jared Linhares. Ted was the oldest of twelve; his surviving siblings are Joseph Linhares, Rev. William Linhares TOR, Thomas Linhares, Steven Linhares, Jeanne Linhares, and Betty Newman. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard, Jesse, and Robert; sisters Mary (Hartung) and Eleanor (McGreavey). “Uncle Ted” will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday February 19, 2019 at Chapman Cole & Gleason, 584 West Falmouth Hwy. (RT28A), West Falmouth. The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 20th at St. John the Evangelist, 841 Shore Rd., Pocasset MA followed by a burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
