Eleanor “Ellie” McGrath

1930 ∼ 2020

Centerville - Eleanor A. “Ellie” McGrath (Novick) 90, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2020 after a brief illness.

Born in Norwood, MA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Novick. Wife of 66 years to the late Richard "Red" McGrath, sister to the late Charles Novick Jr., and survived by her brother Francis Novick of Colorado Springs, CO.

After WWII, Red returned to Norwood and met Eleanor (aka Sadie) the love of his life.  They had a wonderful life together, raised a family and became very active members in their community.  Eleanor worked in banking and as an executive assistant for many years.    Eleanor and Red were members of the Irish Social Club in West Roxbury and Irish American Club of Cape Cod and many other organizations. Proud of her Lithuanian heritage she became half Irish after marrying Red. Their home was grand central station always filled with music, fun and laughter and folks gathering. Eleanor and Red were quite the team making an everlasting impression on everyone they met.

She was petite but powerful, dressed for success, making inroads for women long before the feminist movement became popular and always one to speak her mind. Ellie was fiercely independent, a true leader and organizer. Ellie loved to celebrate and entertain, sing, dance, play the piano, travel with Red, and spend time with family and friends. She volunteered in numerous organizations over the years making community service and helping others a passion that was the central core of everything she did throughout her life. Upon retirement to Cape Cod, Eleanor led the Victrola Society Chorus of Cape Cod, a group of dedicated seniors, which has entertained thousands of people in nursing homes, assisted living and many others for over 25 years.  Blessed with a beautiful voice, performing at many venues since she was a child, she used her talent to make others happy.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judy and Mark Vollmer, her beloved grandchildren Peter and Laura Vollmer and Molly and Adam Lipper and great grandchildren Brady, Noelle, Piper and Allie all of Cotuit, MA and also our beloved longtime friend Father George Winchester S.J. of Weston MA.
