Osterville - Eleanor Shea Crossley, 92, died peacefully in her sleep on September 30, 2018. Born in Chicopee Falls, MA, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Nora (Dowd) Shea and the late Finian Shea. She was raised and educated along with her brothers, the late Richard Shea and Brother Martin (Frank) Shea, in Chicopee Falls, then graduated from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee with a Bachelor of the Arts. After graduating, she served as a 3rd grade school teacher in the Chicopee school system. Eleanor met and married the love of her life, the late William C. Crossley in 1949. Together, they raised four children in North Haven, CT. Eleanor's role as wife and mother brought her joy and satisfaction. When she tragically lost her son Richard in a motorcycle accident in 1973, it was her strength that uplifted her family.
In their retirement, Eleanor and William moved to Cape Cod, where she lived for the past 40 years. This is where Eleanor became "Bonnie" to her eight grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, flourishing as a grandmother and the matriarch of the family. She always embraced a love of travel and continued this tradition with her children and their families. Quick with a joke, a loving word, and a warm embrace, Eleanor brought joy to all who knew her. After her husband's death from cancer in 2000, Eleanor rose again from tragedy and embraced love once more with her sweetheart, the late Robert Reider of Genoa, WI. Ellie's resilience, faith, and hope are perhaps her greatest legacy. Ellie's family includes her children William C. Crossley Jr. of Hyannis, MA; Catherine (Crossley) Johnson and her husband the late Van B. Johnson of Sandwich, MA; the late Richard Crossley; and Elizabeth (Crossley) Jehan and her husband Gary Jehan of Guilford, CT; her grandchildren Finian Johnson of Los Angeles, CA; Vanessa (Johnson) Foster of Milton, MA; the late Martine Jehan; Gary Jehan of Guilford, CT; Carissa Crossley of Hyannis, MA; Annie Crossley of New York, NY; Erin Crossley of Hyannis, MA; Rachel Crossley of Hyannis, MA; and her 5 great-grandchildren. While Ellie will be greatly missed by those left behind, we take comfort in the words Bill Crossley engraved on the clock he crafted for her with his own hands. These words remind us that Eleanor's love is with us "Not for just an hour, Not for just a day, Not for just a year, But Always."
Visiting hours will be held at John Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills on Thursday Oct. 11, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Oct, 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main St., Centerville. Burial will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Chicopee, MA.
