Elizabeth A. Nilsson

1928 ∼ 2017

Elizabeth A. “ Betty” Nilsson, of West Barnstable, passed away on October 31, 2017.         

She was born to Lillian (Makepeace) and Daniel L. Atwood in 1928.  She graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1946 and Salem Teachers College in 1950.

She was the wife of the late Evald H. (Neil) Nilsson.  She leaves their daughter Jane E. and her husband Christopher H. Snow of West Barnstable.  She was predeceased by her sisters Elise A. Gray and Jean A. Bradley and her brother William M. Atwood. She is survived by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

After college Betty worked for the Town of Barnstable for several years.  She served on many town and village committees including the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Old Kings Highway Historic District Committee. She held, at various times, every office in the West Barnstable Civic Association and served on many special committees for more than 50 years.

She was most proud of being the West Barnstable Citizen of the Year in 1996, the recipient of the Jane Eshbaugh Community Service Award in 2004 and having been the Grand Marshal of the Barnstable-West Barnstable 4th of July parade in 2012.  She was a member of West parish Church, The Beach Club, Friends of Whelden Library, West Barnstable Historical Society, Dig & Delve- Garden Club and the “Thursday Bridge Girls”.

Burial will be private.
