Eugene C. Mauro (Gene) of Yarmouth Port, MA formerly of Marlboro, MA passed away on February 7, 2021 after a short illness. Gene was born November 27, 1932 to Charles & Gertrude (DiMatteo) Mauro. He was raised in Marlboro, MA and graduated from Marlboro High School in 1950. At a young age, Gene was one of the family workers at Mauro Farms & Gardens, growing apples, tomatoes, vegetables and specializing in spectacular football mums. Gene became a cement mason after high school, working over 30 years for the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Union, Local 51, in Framingham, Massachusetts.
In 1956, Gene married Carol Barbato and they had nine children together. He retired to Yarmouth Port, MA in 1986 where he continued his passion for gardening. Tomatoes were his specialty and his garden contained over 20 varieties. His notorious stand under an umbrella made him known as the “Tomato Man of 6A.”
Gene enjoyed winters in Anna Maria Island, Florida with Carol, where his children would visit often especially for the Superbowl. He was an avid Red Sox fan and a skilled player of Checkers and Dominos. Gene loved riding in the 1931 Model A he restored.
Gene is predeceased by his sister Rose Marie (Mauro) Bonitatibus.
Gene is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol Mauro, children, Charles Mauro (wife Karen), Michael Mauro (wife Hilaurie), Daniel Mauro (wife Martha), Anthony Mauro (wife Joann), Maria Pierozzi (husband Dennis), Lisa Mauro/Niebuhr (late husband Allan); Christina Weed, Sandra Crisafulli (husband Paul), Dennis Mauro and his sister, Eleanor Travers (late husband Raymond). He also was the proud grandfather of 23 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 -11 am on Monday, February 15 at Saint Pius X Catholic Church, in South Yarmouth, MA. A funeral Mass will immediately follow at 11. The Mass can be seen via live stream at https://www.stpiusxsy.com . Donations in Gene’s name can be made to St. Jude’s hospital for Children.
