Eugene O. DeFelice, Sr.

Eugene O. DeFelice, Sr., (98) of Oak Bluffs, passed away on May 31, 2019. He was born the 7th of 12 children to Dominic and Susan (Fate) DeFelice.

Eugene lived in Dedham where he attended Dedham schools and where he also worked at Dedham Transcript. He attended Dartmouth College and began his teaching career in Jaffrey, NH. 

Eugene enlisted in the Armed Forces Marine Branch, First Marine Division, during WWII, just after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was stationed at Guadalcanal and was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart Medal. He was then recalled to active duty during the Korean War. Afterwards, he relocated to Canton and continued teaching. After receiving his Master’s Degree, he continued in the Canton school system as an administrator. Eugene lived in Canton until his retirement. After retiring, Eugene moved permanently to Martha’s Vineyard. He continued to be an active member in the American Legion and the VFW. He was very proud to have served his country. Memorial Day was a very special day for him. He marched every year in the Memorial Day Parade.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Constance Vaux DeFelice, his sister Elizabeth Podolski of GA, his sons Albert Deininger of Loma Lina, CA, Eugene O. DeFelice Jr. of Martha’s Vineyard, Steven A. DeFelice of Redding, CA, Robert DeFelice of Martha’s Vineyard, William DeFelice of Key West, FL, his daughters Susan A. Leahy of Hanson, MA, and Christine Buckley of Martha’s Vineyard. He also leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visiting hours for Eugene will take place on Thursday, June 6, from 5-7pm at Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, in Oak Bluffs.

Gene’s funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 7 in St. Augustine’s Church, Franklin St., Vineyard Haven at 11:00am with burial following in the Oak Grove Cemetery, State Rd. Vineyard Haven. A masonic funeral service will be performed at the graveside with military honors provided by the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Legion, PO Box 257, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
