FLORENCE ELLEN WOOD January 11,1944 - November 13, 2017

Florence E. (Rugg) Wood, 73, died unexpectedly at her home on Nantucket on November 14, 2017.

Florence was born in Bay Shore, NY on January 11,1944 and was predeceased by her parents, Victor and Antoinette Rugg.

Educated at Notre Dame, MD and C.W. Post, she later received her Doctorate of Education from Columbia University.

A dynamic educator and elementary school principal in Bay Shore for 37 years, Florence dedicated her professional life to her students. She reveled in organizing trips for more than 500 students to Broadway shows and Mets baseball games. Her students revered her. Florence was the first to be awarded the “Woman Educator of the Year” by Suffolk County.

In retirement, she volunteered for many charitable organizations. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and their friends. Her recent adventures included trips to Africa, France and the Middle East. When she wasn’t traveling the world, she spent summers on Long Island and Fire Island and most recently Nantucket, and winters in St. Croix. She loved to play golf, entertain, and spend time with family and friends.

Florence loved her large extended family. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Philip Wood, his five children and 13 grandchildren, her sister Pauline Gray, brother-in-law Tom Gray, her brother Victor Rugg and his wife, Edith, along with her beloved nieces Jacqueline and Colleen, and nephew Victor, Jr. and their children, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
