Frederik Bommer

Frederik Bommer, beloved husband, father and mentor to many, passed peacefully on October 31, 2018, with family by his side.

Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on August 29, 1928, Fred and his immediate family, including his brother, Jan, and his sister, Jelte, survived the Nazi occupation during WWII, despite his mother’s Jewish ancestry.  Fred worked in the Dutch Merchant Marine as a navigation naval officer, and on the Holland America cruise line where he met Dolores, his wife of 64 years.

In Emerson, New Jersey, where the couple lived for 35 years, Fred was a self-employed painting contractor, while he and Dolores raised six children. When Fred retired in 1994, his love for the sea brought the couple to Centerville, MA.

On Cape Cod, Fred achieved recognition as a highly esteemed math enrichment tutor. For over 20 years he was a dedicated volunteer in the Barnstable school system, where his unique and loving methods, interspersed with personal stories from the War, earned him wide acclaim from the many students, parents and teachers who knew him.

When he retired from his second successful career, at age 87, Fred received many honors, including an award from the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

Besides his wife, Dolores, Fred is survived by his six children and their spouses: Jilda Barcalow and Steven Bommer & Barbara Cooper of MA; Maura Bommer & Toine van der Knaap of Ontario, Canada; Jay & Rung Bommer of VT; Audrey Bommer, and Amy & Gerald Griffin of NJ.  He is also survived by eight grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, at John Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Rd., Marstons Mills, MA.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday November 9th at Our Lady of Victory Parish, 230 South Main Street, Centerville, MA. Burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
