FAIRHAVEN—George Burgess, 89, passed away peacefully at Our Lady’s Haven in Fairhaven on November 1, 2018.
He was born in Falmouth, the son of the late Manuel and Silvana (Barbosa) Burgess.
He is survived by his children, Wayne George Burgess of Hanover, Cynthia Oliveira of New Bedford, Susan McGrath of Middleboro and Patty Sousa of Salem; his former wife, Florence Burgess of Hyannis; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a sister of Falmouth.
In George’s younger years, he worked for Harry Burnham Produce Co. of Falmouth as a truck driver delivering produce to stores. Later on he was an Executive Produce Purchasing Agent for 33 Fernandes Supermarkets for over 20 years. George also worked for the town of Lakeville for 20 years. He would always volunteer to snow plow for long hours. He enjoyed going deep sea fishing to relax; he loved his solid wood boats and did not like fiberglass boats. When he moved to Fairhaven, he would walk with his dog Stubby, daily at Fort Phoenix. George was always independent and did his own laundry at Delken, shopping at Stop and Shop and socializing at Honey Dew. He often would say Bah Hum Bug or whatever floats your boat. George was kindhearted with a dry sense of humor.
Relatives and friends are invited and may visit with George’s family on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth from 9 until 10 AM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy, East Falmouth.
