George D. Sylvia, 94, of Teaticket, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the JML Care Center. He was the son of the late Antone D. and Mary (Rogers) Sylvia of East Falmouth and the beloved husband of the late Sylvia M. (Moniz) Sylvia for 62 years. She passed away in 2006.
Born in 1923, he was a lifetime resident of Teaticket. He graduated from Lawrence High School and served in the Merchant Marines from 1943 to 1945. Upon his discharge, George served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. After the war, George returned home and worked at Cape Cod Marine Service (now known as MacDougall’s Boatyard) before joining the Falmouth Fire Department in 1950. He was stationed at various firehouses around town at one time or another. George was President of the Firefighter’s Union in 1966 and retired in 1980 after serving 30 years with the department.
In his is spare time, George loved to hunt, fish, and garden. He also participated in several organizations throughout the community. He was a committee member and Secretary Treasurer of Troop 42 Boy Scouts of America, and awarded the Pelican Award and Order of the Arrow. He was the Director of the Midway Trap and Skeet Club as well as a member of the Cooties organization of the VFW.
George was predeceased by his parents, four sisters, Agnes Pimental, Mary Medeiros, Jenny Rapoza, Adeline Medeiros, and youngest daughter, Sharon Shoner. He is survived by his oldest daughter, Beverly Williams and her husband, Raymond, and Son-in-law, George Shoner, all of Teaticket. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Craig Williams and his wife Joanna, and Rebecca Williams and significant other Matthew Costa, and Kerry Wells and her husband Duncan Wells, and three great grandchildren, Brianna Costa, Tessa and James Brody Williams as well as many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Visiting Hours will be from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in the Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy. (Route 28A), WEST FALMOUTH. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Noon on Thursday, April 12th in the St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy. (Route 28), East Falmouth. Burial will follow in the VA National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
