Gerald H. Burke, 87, of Yarmouth, passed away on May 1st at Cape Cod Hospital. He died peacefully, surrounded by family, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Carole (Crabbe), and his children, Paul, Patricia, and Matthew Burke, daughter-in-law Kathryn (Armstrong) Burke and Grandson Evan Burke, as well as family throughout the US and the UK. He was predeceased by parents Mary (Curran) and Gerald Burke, and brothers Frederick and Laurence.
Born in 1932 in Glasgow, Scotland, Gerry graduated from Stow College in 1950, then served in the Korean War, where he was injured saving a fellow soldier. He married Carole in 1958, then moved to Mamaroneck, NY the same year.
A skilled carpenter, Gerry worked a variety of jobs until the couple moved to Cape Cod in 1971, where Gerry began working for the Dennis-Yarmouth school system. Eventually, he became head carpenter, a position he held until retirement.
Gerry was quick with a joke, gifted with a dry sense of humor and a friendly, teasing manner. It was known that the more Gerry liked you, the more he busted your chops, and his warm, no-nonsense attitude was beloved by everyone he met.
A memorial service will be held on June 8th at 11am (with a reception immediately following)
at Maplewood at Mayflower: 579 Buck Island Road, West Yarmouth, MA.
