Grace B. Murphy Gonsalves Brooks, 95, of Pocasset passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Falmouth Hospital. She was born July 15, 1921 in Brockton to Alton and Dorinda (Doughty) Murphy. She was the widow of the late Joseph S. Gonsalves who died in 1972 and the widow of the late John J. Brooks who died in 1991.
Grace was a 1940 graduate of Brockton High School. She also graduated from Southeastern Regional Vocational Nursing School in 1971 where she received her LPN certificate.
She lived and worked as a waitress in Brockton for many years. She also worked as an LPN at the Brockton Hospital and Cardinal Cushing Hospital. She moved to Pocasset in 1975 and continued working in nursing at the Cape Cod Nursing and Retirement Home in Buzzards Bay. She also worked at Bullocks Nursing Service for 15 years, Guardian Self Storage in Pocasset, and Cape Cod Cleaners, before her retirement.
Grace was a former member of Trinity Baptist Church in Brockton and the Bourne United Methodist Church.
She leaves her six children: Carolyn Matta (James) of New York, Richard Gonsalves of Florida, Robert Gonsalves (Joanie) of Yarmouth, Alan Gonsalves of Centerville, Paul Gonsalves of Pocasset, and Nancy Gonsalves of Fair Haven; 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; her sister, Helen Silva of Alabama; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Ralph Murphy, Alton Murphy, and Jenette New, and her daughter-in-law, Laurene Gonsalves.
Visiting hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 10 at the Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy (Route 28A). A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 11 at the funeral home, followed by burial at Melrose Cemetery, 88 N. Pearl Street in Brockton.
