H.A. “Mac” McCarthy

H.A. “Mac” McCarthy, 67, of East Falmouth, formerly of Chicago, passed away peacefully at home on June 17, 2020. He was the beloved son of the late Robert H. McCarthy.

Mac served as a police officer for the City of Chicago and retired as a Sergeant in 2008 after 30 years of Service. He was a founding member and a side drummer for the Pipes and Drums of the Chicago Police Department (“the Band”). Mac was most proud of the Band’s mission to find and identify 63 Officers of the Chicago Police Dept. killed in the line of Duty, and place headstones on their forgotten graves. There was no greater privilege for Mac than to honor his fallen brothers and sisters in Blue and Red by performing or attending a funeral in uniform. He was also the first Inductee to the IACP/DuPont Kevlar Survivors Club after being gravely injured in the line of duty in 1983 and his vest saved his life. He was a highly decorated officer and received the police department’s highest honor of the Blue Star Award twice. On 9/11, he witnessed the attack on our country on television, along with the rest of the World. Within 24 hours, he did not hesitate to “self-deploy” to New York City with all his gear in tow. He was on his annual furlough and it was his duty to help however he could. He spent three long, tiring weeks on the outskirts of Manhattan and was humbled to be able to offer assistance.

His passions were his fast cars, including Mercury Marauders and Shelby GTs. He owned many. He was honored to receive a personal invitation from Carroll Shelby to attend an event at Shelby’s ranch in Terligua, Texas. How many people can say they played poker with Carroll Shelby and also had Carroll autograph their car! Storytelling, screenwriting, Celtic music, road trips, especially Route 66 many times, performance road course tracking and Civil War history were his passions as well.

Mac will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Mac is survived by many friends which include his best friend Mary O’Keeffe, Bob Tischler, Rev. Keith Shuley CDR USN, Dan and Julie Kappesser of IN, Chris and Gordon Heissler of MD, Cari Southworth and Kenny Brown of IN, Russell and Linda Schaefer of IL, Laurel and Bill Bresnahan of IL, Frank and Diana Iglinski of MI, Linda Abbe and family, Peter Winson, William and Angie Baron and family, Catherine O’Keeffe, Bob and Kimberly O’Keeffe and family.

Godspeed, SergntMac!
