Hazel (Brewer) Warren

Centerville - Hazel (Brewer) Warren, age 96, died on May 2, 2019 peacefully at home. She was born in Waterville, Maine on April 24, 1923 and grew up in an astonishing upbringing of magnificent flower and vegetable gardens. Her parents supplied the local hospital and church with floral contributions instilled in Hazel a purpose of liberality and community.

Hazel was a Colby College graduate, Class of 1944, and active member of the American Association of University Women, at a time when few women earned college degrees.

She began her married life with Robert Quincy Warren, US Army Air Corps veteran, in Portsmouth, NH. They established a family in Manchester, NH, Burlington, MA and Melrose, MA. Hazel was a school librarian at Andover Junior High School and Wakefield High School. Upon retirement Hazel and Bob moved to Centerville where she lived the last 35 years of her life.

She was an avid tennis enthusiast, bridge player, insatiable reader, gardener and home crafts artisan.

Left to venerate the life of Hazel and guided by her love are her sons John Warren and his wife Wendy of Stoneham and Paul Warren and his husband Chris Chi of Hillsdale, NY; two grandchildren, Leigh Warren of Malden and Matthew Warren of Somerville.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Robert, parents Clarence and Myrtle Brewer of Waterville, ME, and sisters Francis Barker of Winslow, ME and Mary Norton of Brewer, ME.

Hazel was a life member of the Centerville Historical Society, Centerville Library, Centerville Civic Association and member of the South Congregational Church. She was among the original volunteers to restore Ayling Park, Meeting House Park and Mothers Park in Centerville. She served as Chair of the Centerville Beautification Committee for over a decade and was recognized several times with Community Service Excellence Awards. She is remembered by her family and her Centerville community support network as a vibrant, cheerful, intelligent and independent Mainer who shined light on those around her.
