Helen Marie Vogel, 88, of Falmouth, died May 16, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Julius A. and Mary L. (McElroy) Vogel and sister of the late William Vogel.
After graduating from both Belmont High School and Mt. Auburn School of Nursing, she worked as an airline stewardess for American Airlines. She went back to school and graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Nursing from Boston University in 1965. She returned to Mount Auburn Hospital as a nursing instructor and donated her cap to the hospitals time capsule which will be opened in 2086. In 1987 she retired from the Department of Public Health, Division of Healthcare Quality where she had worked for many years as the Chief Hospital Inspector/Field Operation Supervisor. She volunteered for numerous organizations during her retirement years.
Playing cards, vacationing on cruise ships, frequent trips to Aruba, going to casinos, and skiing the Alps were some of her favorite things to do. She was an avid golfer, won numerous tournaments, and was a member of the W.G.A.M. When she was younger she was an outstanding player of the Belmont Tennis Club and had been rated No. 5 in national girls’ tennis.
She is survived by her sister, Maureen Saunders; brother-in-law Gerald Saunders; 3 nieces; 3 nephews; and 11 great nieces and great nephews; close friends Ann Cumming and Ruth Lawrence; Ruth’s daughters, Judy Killeen, Janet Lawrence, and Andrea Arruda; . The family and friends of Helen thank the wonderful staff at both Atria Senior Living and Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at St. Jude Chapel at Christ the King Parish, 3 Job’s Fishing Rd., Mashpee. There will be visitation in the chapel at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at a later date at Belmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Auburn Hospital, C/O Development Office, 330 Mt. Auburn St, Cambridge, MA 02138.
