Henry “Hank” Souza
1919 ∼ 2018
Henry “Hank” Souza of Harwich, passed away at his home on November 1, 2018 at the age of 99. Born on August 27, 1919 in New Bedford to Joaquim “Jack” and Adeline Costa Souza. Beloved husband of the late Madeline Rose Souza with whom he had shared 62 years of marriage. Brother of the late Rose Leyton of Dennis and Aurora Roderick of Fairhaven. Survived by daughters Colleen Sheppard of Nahant (her husband Walter and daughter Aimee), Etta Souza of Harwich (her son Mario), and Cetra Branion of Wareham (her sons Joby, Amando and Rory). He also leaves behind many dedicated caregivers and dear family friend Esther Simons.
In 1937, Henry arrived in Harwich at age 18 and started working at Snow Inn, later known as Wychmere Harbor Club. Although the Inn was a seasoned resort, Henry was employed year round by the Thompson Family for they immediately realized his immense loyalty, warm personality and perpetual smile endeared him to decades of inn guests and summer visitors. His years at Snow Inn were interrupted when he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his duty, Henry returned to Snow Inn, where he remained until retiring in the mid 1980’s. Henry was always a New York Yankee fan and treasured meeting Joe DiMaggio at the inn. A lover of jazz music, he had a vast collection from the era of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He also enjoyed following Lou Columbo on Cape Cod.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 4 – 7pm at the Morris, O’Connor and Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main Street, Harwich, MA and a Funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 11 am. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery Pleasant Lake Avenue, Harwich.
