Irene Handy

1932 ∼ 2020

Irene Handy

Irene Handy (Santiago), 87, of Falmouth, MA went to be with the Lord after a long battle with kidney disease on June 25, 2020 with her family close by.  Irene’s gorgeous blue eyes would light up a room. When Irene smiled and laughed she showed her beautiful heart. She had such a loving disposition, was always kind and welcoming to everyone. Irene loved God and embraced her Portuguese heritage as a member of the Holy Ghost Society on Fresh Pond Road and St. Anthony’s Parish. Irene retired in the 90’s from Stop and Shop after over 30 years and is still remembered as the “bread lady”.  Irene was an avid candlepin bowler and was on a league for many years. Irene truly enjoyed going to bingo, casinos and playing games with her family.  Irene and her late husband “Eddie” loved to travel in their motor home, spending winters in Florida; meeting up with family and friends, they embraced every moment.

Irene was predeceased by her loving husband Edward Handy, her mother Lucy Santiago (Teixeira), father Justo Santiago, sister Kathleen DePonte and husband William.  She leaves behind her brothers Edward Santiago Sr. and wife Norma (Bearse), Albert Santiago Sr. and wife Jeanne (Auger) of East Falmouth, sister Alice Ratzlaff and husband Jim of Nevada and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family wishes to thank all of Irene’s doctors, staff, Falmouth Hospital staff, Elder Services of Cape Cod staff and the many other caregivers. A special thanks to The Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod’s staff, for their exceptional care and kindness which truly made each day especially cheery for her.

Services for Irene Handy will be held on September 15, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Anthony’s Church East Falmouth, MA. Burial will be private.  In Lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Fresh Pond Holy Ghost Society, P.O. Box 2204, Teaticket, MA 02536.
