Irene P. (Romiza) Hutton of Falmouth died on Friday, January 25 after a long illness. She was 94. She was the beloved wife of Darrell D. Hutton and they were happily married for 51 years. Born in Fall River, Mrs. Hutton moved to Falmouth at an early age with her family and attended schools in Falmouth. She was the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Maria O. Romiza.
She grew up in a very musical family in which her father played the violin. She developed a love of music and dancing from a very early age, and during WWII, she and her sisters loved to dance at the NCO club at Otis.
She and Joseph B. Pacheco, a veteran of WWII, married in 1946 and had five children together. They lived in the Santa Clara area of California for a time, but she and her children moved back to Falmouth after her husband passed away in 1961.
In 1966, she met Darrell Hutton, a WWII Marine veteran, and they married in 1967. She and her husband loved to dance, especially the Jitterbug, Hully Gully, Waltz, and Charleston, and often spent time dancing at the Harbor Lounge in Falmouth. She loved listening to the radio as well, and was fond of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Elvis.
For a number of years, Mrs. Hutton worked at her sister Mary’s laundry company in Falmouth, which serviced many local area hotels. She worked for Augat in Mashpee as a machinery operator. While there, she also served as an interpreter for her fellow co-workers as she was fluent in speaking, writing and reading Portuguese.
An avid Bingo player, she and her husband would often travel to other states such as Vermont and New York to attend Bingo games. Together they attended weekly games at St. John’s Church in Pocasset for over 30 years where she developed many lifelong friendships.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to cook and bake, and also was known for her love of wearing modern, fashionable outfits.
Besides her husband, she leaves behind two brothers, Manuel Romiza and John Romiza of Falmouth; two daughters, Linda M. Medeiros of Falmouth and Nancy Pacheco of Falmouth; and son Wayne Pacheco of Yarmouth. She is the mother of the late Sandra L. Rose and Kenneth Pacheco. Mrs. Hutton also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on February 6th at 10 am in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St. Falmouth, followed by a graveside service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
