Joanne Barboza Ross

Joanne Barboza Ross passed away peacefully on April 6, 2020 at the age of 90.  Born in 1929 to the late Alice Barboza DaRosa and Manuel Barboza, Joanne leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and family.

Joanne was born and raised in East Falmouth, Massachusetts, before moving to Boston where she committed herself to community activism and tenants’ rights in the Columbia Point housing projects and throughout the city of Boston. Joanne served as an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts and was involved in national politics during the Carter Administration. Later in life, not inclined to retire, Joanne utilized her multilingual skills and broad knowledge of services as a court investigator for the Suffolk County Juvenile Court.

Joanne leaves behind her sons, Gabriel Ross and Armond Barboza-Ross and her brother, Armando Barboza. She was predeceased by her eldest child, Margo Ross-Lyman, her sisters, Irene Jones and Agnes Owens, and her brothers, Manuel and Daniel Barboza.

She will be missed by granddaughters Ana Lyman, Moria Feighery-Ross, and Ella Lyman. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her wise guidance and love.

A Celebration of Joanne’s Life will be held at a later date.
