Joanne M. Jensen

Joanne M. Jensen, 77, a longtime resident of Falmouth, passed away on January 30th when her weakened body could no longer support her enduring spirit.  She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1943 to the late Joseph and Ruth Zeman.

After growing up in Ohio, then moving to Florida, Joanne eventually found her way to Falmouth in 1968.  She met her husband Henry Jensen and life-long partner, who embraced her two young sons.  The happy couple would soon welcome another son and then a daughter.

Joanne was a seamstress.  She worked for Talbots in Osterville for many years until venturing into her own business, “The Perfect Fit,” which focused on tailoring clothes and specialized in wedding dresses.  During this time, she trained her children to help in the business, hemming shirts and pants for extra spending money.

In addition to her work for clients, Joanne experienced great joy in using her sewing gifts to craft puppets.  She would create storylines to provide entertainment for her children’s birthday parties.  Over the years she extended these puppet performances into Cape author Thornton Burgess stories and local historical characters, including Katherine Lee Bates.  In the early 1990’s, Joanne developed a brain tumor and had several difficult operations.  Although she was eventually able to continue an active lifestyle, her hand dexterity suffered and created challenges for her design and sewing work.  Not to be stopped, Joanne began the next chapter in life: volunteering to bring great joy to others as well as herself.  In Florida, she entertained weekly at veterans’ clinics and hospitals with her ventriloquist frog puppet Veronica and her dog Angel.  The trio was always fitted with elaborately designed matching costumes, all made from scratch by Joanne.  Examples include St Patrick’s Day in green and shamrocks, Valentine’s Day with Red hearts, and a Patriots football costume.  She made over 25 complete designs, with slight variations for herself, her puppet, and her little bichon frise.  After living in Florida for several years, Joanne returned to Falmouth.  She continued with volunteering enthusiastically for over 15 with a special heart for Falmouth Hospital.

Joanne leaves her son Eric of Hatchville, his wife Aileen, and grandsons Gunnar and Aksel; her daughter Sue Driscoll of Hatchville, her husband Rob, and grandchildren Dylan and Alexandra; her son Bill of New Hampshire; her son Ken of Florida; and her granddaughter Amber and her great-grandchildren Aryana and Joshua, also in Florida.

God was always central in Joanne’s life, and she was committed to walking in His Path.  A focal point around her faith was Falmouth Baptist Church, where she met the love of her life Henry at a New Year’s Eve gathering.  Her children are comforted that Joanne is now in His Hands with Henry, who left four months prior.

A private family Graveside Ceremony is planned for February 9th with a celebration of life to follow in July.
