John B. Murphy, 87 of South Yarmouth, passed away on October 26, 2019. He was born in Boston on November 16, 1931 and is predeceased by his father John J. Murphy, mother Anna P. Slattery, wife Helen “Shirley” Falter and son Michael J. Murphy.
Survived by his sister Anne P. Manning of South Yarmouth and his children: John B. Murphy, Jr. and his wife Mercy of Camarillo, CA, Annellen Pulsifer and her husband Gordon of Norwell, Shirley M. Demers and her husband David of South Yarmouth, Laura E. Murphy of Hull, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his grandchildren: Taylor Demers, Jessica Murphy, Michael and Brenton Pulsifer, Michael Murphy.
John (“Bartley”) grew up in Boston, MA. He attended St. Sebastian High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. After high school, he went on to earn a B.S. degree in engineering from Northeastern University as well as a math certification from MIT. In 1951, John served in the U.S. Marine Corp and was sent overseas during the Korean Conflict in 1952. During his time in the marines, he earned a National Defense Service Medal.
Upon his return, John met the love of his life, Helen “Shirley” and settled in West Roxbury, MA, where they raised their 5 children. John enjoyed an extensive career as a mechanical engineer. He was the Inventor of Record for several patents developing medical devices for Hewlett Packard and copy and camera equipment for Polaroid Corporation. John often spent many nights sitting at his kitchen table reviewing his blueprints and testing his theories using common household items.
In his spare time, John enjoyed playing golf with his friends, watching his favorite baseball team, The Yankees, spending time with his dog Jesse, and having cookouts with the family. John was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge in South Yarmouth and spent much time “discussing” war and politics with his comrades. He always wanted to be surrounded by his family and even lived next door to his beloved sister Doody and daughter Shirley and her family for most of his life.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 30th from 5-7 pm at Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Dr. South Yarmouth. Funeral Mass Thursday, October 31st at 10 am at St. Theresa of Avila Church, Centre St. West Roxbury. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury.
