John J. Smith

John J. Smith, born in 1930 of E. Falmouth, formerly of Lynn and Braintree, died on Sunday, May 7, 2017 after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Anne M. (Donovan) Smith. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Clarence and Winifred (Healy) Smith.  

John graduated from Boston College in 1952. After serving in the Air Force on Johnston Island in the Pacific, John worked for Commercial Union Insurance Company. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, family and grandchildren and will be dearly missed. John especially enjoyed time spent in Ogunquit ME with his family.

John is survived by his step-children: Joseph F. Dooley and his wife Jane of Weymouth, Arthur A. Dooley, Jr. of Boston, James D. Dooley of E. Falmouth, John P. Dooley and his wife Melissa of E. Falmouth, Richard G. Dooley and his wife Gail of Marshfield; and Amy M. O’Neil and her husband Shawn of E. Sandwich. He was the devoted grandfather of Kevin, Brian, Christopher, Christina, Lauren, Gregory, Catherine, Erin, Meghan, Julia and Katelyn.  John is also survived by his sister, Peggy M. (Smith) Chadwell and her husband Linc of Missouri, his brother, James C. Smith and his wife Claire of Hamilton, many nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law, Margaret Sullivan and her husband Walter of Marshfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 10, from 5 to 7 pm in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth Center. A Eulogy will begin at 9:45 AM, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 11 at St. Patrick Church, 511 Main Street, Falmouth. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 11:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Christian Children’s Fund, PO Box 26484, Richmond, VA  23261-6484.
