Johnny Sawyer Sr.

SOUTH DENNIS- Johnny Sawyer Sr., 87, of South Dennis, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was the loving longtime partner for 45 years to his dedicated significant other, Ann Dutra, of South Dennis.

Born on October 23, 1932, in Orleans, Vermont, he was the dear son of the late Arthur R. and Ruth (Hardy) Sawyer.

Johnny grew up in Claremont, New Hampshire and he was a member of the Class of 1950 from Stevens High School in Claremont.

A proud and patriotic man, a few months after graduating from high school, Johnny enlisted in the United States Navy. He enlisted in November of 1950, just a short time after the start of the Korean War. During his time in the service, he was stationed as a Gunner on the USS New Jersey. This assignment resulted in him being sent overseas to the shores of the Korean Peninsula. Throughout the war, the USS New Jersey provided much needed artillery support to US and Allied Forces.  While passing time on the ship, Johnny participated in boxing.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Johnny returned to New Hampshire where he started his family. He worked as a meat cutter at local grocery store in Claremont, New Hampshire. After some time, he became the co-owner of Stan’s Market in Claremont.

It was during a vacation to Cape Cod that Johnny fell in love with the natural beauty and landscape of the area. After to returning to New Hampshire, he decided that he wanted to move to Cape Cod permanently; soon after, he and his family relocated to Harwich.

Johnny continued to work as a meat cutter on the Cape. He was employed by Angelo’s Supermarket in Harwich.

In his spare time, he enjoyed his dogs, golfing, skiing, and his family.

In addition to his loving companion, Ann, Johnny is survived by his cherished children: Johnny Sawyer Jr., and his wife, Jan, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Cindy Barczak and her husband, Mick, of Crete, Illinois; and Jim Sawyer, of Newport, New Hampshire. He was the devoted grandfather to Timothy Barczak and wife Jenn; Trisha, Cody, and Kyle Barczak; and James Sawyer. He leaves behind his great-grandughter, Zoey Barczak; and he will be sorely missed by his sister, Phyllis Sawyer, of Stoddard, New Hampshire.

In addition to his parents, Johnny is predeceased by his brothers, Reginald and Hardy Sawyer.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, from 10 -11 a.m., immediately followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at  Morris, O’Connor, & Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main Street, Harwich Center.

Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Provincetown.
