The Reverend Jonathan Carl Ahnquist, 68, of Sandwich and formerly of West Barnstable, died at home on July 8, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of 45 years to Jana (Eilbeck) Ahnquist and the son of the late Rev. Hubert and Lucille (Lawson). Jonathan was born in Portland, Oregon.
Jonathan was a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA.
He first served at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Avon, CT followed by Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Newington, CT, where he led the church for 9 years. He was then called to serve at First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable until his retirement in 2015.
Jonathan lived a life of service. He served as Board Member with the Cape Cod Council of Churches, where he hosted the television show, “On Good Faith”, a program which explored issues relevant to the Cape’s faith communities. He served as Executive Board Member with the Samaritans of Cape Cod and the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, and Vice President of the Board for Mayflower Place in Yarmouth. Jonathan was an active member of the Cape Cod Interfaith Coalition, Executive Board Member of Homeless Not Hopeless, and a member of Cape Cod Justice for Youth Collaborative. He served as Dean of the Southeast Massachusetts Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and was a former Confirmation Ministry Facilitator with the ELCA. Jonathan served as chaplain at Spaulding Rehabilitation in Sandwich until March of this year.
Jonathan enjoyed performing as an actor in community theater across the Cape, most regularly with the Barnstable Comedy Club and the Cotuit Center for the Arts. He sang with the Masters Singers of Cape Cod and The Cape Cod Chorale. Always an athlete, Jonathan enjoyed playing sports and going on adventures with his family, and was a friendly face at the YMCA for years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, daughter Jacey Ahnquist Glass and her husband Elliott, their children, Parker, Grayson, and Hunter, all of Pembroke, MA, daughter Jolyn Ahnquist Kittredge and her husband Evan, their children Cole and Emilia, all of Wakefield, MA, and son Jordan Ahnquist of West New York, NJ. He also leaves a sister Valerie Miller of Illinois and a brother Douglas Ahnquist of Iowa, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday, July 12 from 4-7pm at First Lutheran Church, 1663 Main Street, West Barnstable. A Memorial Service will be on Friday, July 13 at 1pm also at First Lutheran Church.
