Jose P. Chaves
1932 ∼ 2020
Jose P. Chaves, 87 of East Bridgewater died peacefully at St. Joseph Manor on April 19. Jose was the loving son of the late Jose and Maria (Ponte) Chaves and was born in Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal.
Like many young men in Santa Maria Jose started working at an early age and in pursuit of a life better lived, he immigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in Cambridge. He reunited with his childhood friend, Maria Figueiredo, and after a brief courtship the two married on June 26, 1954. They settled in East Bridgewater where there were other members of his family. Jose was the consummate hard worker, never missing a day, he was a construction laborer for many years before he started working for Shaws. He worked at the Shaws warehouse in East Bridgewater for over 10 years as a porter. He and Maria loved traveling and visited their hometown many times over the years. Jose was a great fisherman, loved deep sea trips for scup, blue fish and black sea bass, and was always an active member of The Portuguese Holy Ghost Society in Bridgewater.
Jose was always thankful for the friends and family members that helped him when he arrived here in the States and he paid it forward by helping sponsor many young men and women from Santa Maria who immigrated to his part of the world. He always believed in giving back and this was something he taught his children. Jose’s door was always open and liked nothing more than a random friend stopping by to exchange a quick story, sip a brandy and have one of his wife's delicious cookies.
Family was everything to Jose and this especially became true as he aged.
Jose was the loving husband of the late Maria J. (Figueiredo) Chaves and devoted father of the late Rose Marie Chaves, the late Lucy Figueiredo and her husband Luis of Taunton, John Chaves and his wife Maureen of East Bridgewater, Joseph Chaves and his wife Leslie Wilson of TX. Proud “Avo” of Rhiannon, Julianna, Kristen, Renee and “Great Avo” of Rowan and Sawyer.
