Joseph Nicholas Russo III, 71, passed away on July 7, 2017 after a long illness.
He was the husband of Susan M. (Cassidy) Russo for more than 45 years.
He was the son of the late Dr. Joseph N. Russo II and Rosemary T. Russo. Mr. Russo was born in Hartford, CT. He attended the Renbrook School in West Hartford, CT and Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, CT.
In 1968, he earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Trinity College in Hartford, CT and in 1972 he earned his master’s of business administration from Babson College in Wellesley, MA.
From 1974 to 1981, Mr. Russo worked for Heublein, Inc. in Farmington, CT where he first completed a rotational management training program and later became Director of Caribbean Beverage Operations.
For approximately the next seventeen years, Mr. Russo lived on the island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands where he worked for West Indies Corporation / Riise Liquors, Inc. From 1981 to 1986 he worked as an Export & Duty Free Sales Director for A.H. Riise International. Then from 1986 to 1988, he served as Managing Director of A.H. Riise BVI, Ltd. From 1988 to 1990, he served as President of A.H. Riise Wholesale Liquors and from 1990 to 1998; he served as President of A.H. Riise International.
In 1998, he moved to the Bahamas where he served as President & Managing Director of Todhunter Mitchell Wine & Spirits until 2003. During his five years in the Bahamas he was instrumental in developing a new agency portfolio of twenty-nine imported brands and opened seven new stores. He also launched a new flavored rum brand which was sold through the duty free markets in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. During his career he traveled extensively all over the world, throughout the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.
He was a member of the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville, MA for 48 years. He also belonged to a number of other clubs over the years which included; the Wianno Club, the Wianno Yacht Club, the Hartford Club, the St. Thomas Yacht Club and the Hawksbill Yacht Club in Freeport, Grand Bahama (where he served as a past Commodore).
He enjoyed the beach and spending time out on the water. He enjoyed playing golf with his family and fellow members of the Old Guard golf group at the Oyster Harbors Club. His favorite hobbies included tinkering with his boat and his two 1964 Ford Thunderbirds which he proudly displayed each summer at the Fourth of July antique car parade.
He loved his family and was a wonderful and thoughtful husband and father.
Besides his wife, survivors include two children, Joseph N. Russo IV (Elise) and Charles C. Russo, and two brothers, Daniel P. and Frank T. Russo. His brother, Nicholas J. Russo II, passed away in 2006.
The family wishes to thank the Doctors, nurses and staff at Cape Cod Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Curahealth Hospital in Boston. They would also like to express their gratitude to family and friends for their support.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, July 10 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at The John-Lawrence Funeral Home located at 3778 Falmouth Rd., Marstons Mills, MA. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Church located at 421 Wianno Ave., Osterville, MA on Tuesday, July 11 at 11:00 AM.
